Aubri - The Novella Playlist

🎵 Listen up! 🎵

We’re kicking off the first round of Book Bops, where I share the songs I listened to most while writing the book in question!

Today’s spotlight is Aubri.

Aubri is a prequel novella story told from Twilight’s mother’s perspective in the Myrk Maiden universe. This short and bittersweet little book isn’t out yet, but you can prep yourself for the atmosphere by taking a plunge into where my musical mind has been since I started writing it.

Let’s dive into some jives!

#1. The Less I Know the Better - Tame Impala

This retro pop piece is every bit as gorgeous and haunting as I could ask for when it comes to this novella.

Hint: Romance plays a major role in Aubri.

Although it’s a song about wanting someone who is unavailable, the overall vibe - a nostalgic, desire-filled, and almost lonely sound - makes the tragic love in this book feel all the more potent while I listen to it.

“Just don’t make me wait forever…”

#2. Levitating - Dua Lipa

Another nostalgia-infused modern pop piece! (See a theme here?)

This song was also a major listen for me while I was writing Book 2 in The Myrk Maiden Trilogy. The disturbing title - which is the term for an occultic practice - and the rich nighttime vibes spun into a sweet confection of a pop melody makes “Levitating” a beautiful fit for the entire series.

Evil, after all, is attractive. It’s alluring. It masquerades as loveliness… just like this magical song and the magical relationship between Aubri and another sorcerer…

“You can fly away with me tonight… baby let me take you for a ride… I’m levitating."

#3. Blinding Lights - The Weeknd

The past few years have been an era of remakes, rehashes, and reboots. In the music scene, retro songs have been a joy rather than a disappointment, and “Blinding Lights” is one such pleasure.

It’s dark. Desirous. It represents a struggle and a loneliness peppered with passion and longing. With the 80s synth feel, these concepts are kicked up a notch, and it’s groovy.

Needless to say, this is perfect for Aubri!

“Sin City’s cold and empty… no one’s around to judge me…”

#4. Dance, baby! - boy pablo

Fun and relatively light-hearted, this beautiful bop takes a sinister spin when I’m writing Aubri. Imagine the kinds of parties Shadows have and, boom… creepy.

That’s what we like here.

“Dance with me, baby…

#5. Littles Lies - Fleetwood Mac

This song actually is aged, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

It’s another break-up/relationship problem song, but while the message is simple, I’ve always thought “Little Lies” had such a disturbing vibe to it. It was one of the first songs I related my first novel, Daughter Darkness to.

The concept of being lured back into a relationship with enticing words - sweet little lies - fits with the children who worship the God of Lies. It’s also just very human… and not necessarily hybrid-human.

“Oh, no, no, you can’t disguise…”

These are the top five Aubri songs so far. What do you think of them?
